Love that skirt you wear on repeat? Wish you could recreate that perfect shirt you've owned for years? In this class, you’ll learn how to make a paper pattern by copying an existing garment, no taking it apart required.
We’ll guide you through the tracing process, show you how to mark key details, and help you turn your favorite piece into a reusable pattern you can sew again and again.
This class is great for intermediate to advanced sewists. Knowledge of general garment construction is necessary for this course. If you're just starting on your garment journey, check out our "Info Series: Intro to Garment Making" class.
**Note: this workshop will not include sewing. We will work on creating as many pattern pieces as we can on tracing paper, and, depending on complexity, students will leave with a pattern ready to make a mock-up
In this course we'll go over:
- Identifying key pattern pieces in your chosen garment and writing a cut list
- Tools and materials needed
- Measuring and tracing the original garment to create a test paper pattern
- Refining your test paper pattern for accuracy and proper fit
- Notating assembly steps
By the end of this class, you'll possess the skills and confidence to create personalized sewing patterns from the garments you love, eliminating the guesswork of standard sizing. Perfect for anyone looking to expand their sewing knowledge or build a custom wardrobe tailored to their body type.
Class Duration: 2 hours
Students Bring:
- The garment they would like to copy (ideally simple shirts, dresses, or skirts)
- Notebook and writing utensil
Materials included with Registration: We will supply the tracing paper
You will leave with: A paper pattern version of your favorite garment ready for mock up making!
Skill Level: Beginner - No sewing experience required
Vibe: Hands-On Focus. The project’s not overly difficult, but it does require concentration. You’ll need to stay focused, but there’s still time for light socializing between steps.
Age Range: Adults 18+ Teens 15 and up may attend with an adult who is also registered
