Class Description: In this 3.5 hour sewing class we will teach you the basics of using a sewing machine. We'll cover different types of machines and recommendations on where to purchase one. We'll go over tools and notions like what the different thread and needle types are. We'll show you how to thread the machine, wind the bobbin, and sew a straight line.  Once we've got the basics down we will be making reusable tote bags! This is a great first project to help you understand the basics of how sewing projects come together. You'll learn about seam allowance, creating box corners, assembly, and best practices for creating positive sewing habits.

Duration: 3.5 hours total. 1 hour spent reviewing the sewing machine 2.5 hours spent working on your tote bag (we find that students work at different paces, you may finish earlier than others)

Students Bring: You do not need to bring anything for this class! We will supply the sewing machines and all the tools and materials. 

Materials Included: Each student will select a tote kit from our stock of all cotton tote kits

You'll Leave With: A completed reusable tote bag! Plus the knowledge of how to thread and operate a sewing machine. Each student will take home instructions for the tote bag so they can make more on their own. Each student will also receive a handout that covers sewing basics like needle types, thread types, and troubleshooting

Skill Level: Beginner Level 1

Skill Details: If you've never touched a sewing machine or if it's been a while this class is for you! We have designed this class to cater to absolute beginners. You do not need to know anything about sewing to take this class. This is where we recommend starting on your sewing journey!

Age Range: This class is designed for adults 18+. If you're looking for kids sewing classes we recommend checking out our neighbor Tomato Tomato Creative.

  • Cancellation Notice: Makers are kindly requested to provide a minimum of 72 hours' notice in the event of needing to cancel or reschedule a class. This advance notice allows us to accommodate other makers and make any necessary adjustments to our schedule.
  • Refunds: Any class cancellations made more than 72 hours in advance will receive either a full refund on a gift card, or a full refund minus a $5 card processing fee to the card used for registration. This fee accounts for the costs associated with the transaction.
  • Late Cancellations: Cancellations made less than 72 hours before the class start time and no shows will forfeit the registration fee.
