Hey friends! If you've been looking for a fun, easy-to-follow tutorial to make a cozy, loose-fitting jacket, you're in the right place. This chore coat jacket tutorial is perfect for layering and uses the Ruby Star Society pre-hemmed toweling - which, yes, is as amazing as it sounds! You can find the toweling fabric here.
The original inspiration came from Alexia Marcelle Abegg and Devon, who created a tutorial on how to transform toweling fabric into a chic, functional jacket. We loved the idea so much that we followed her steps and created a video series to guide you through the process. The best part? You get to take advantage of the pre-hemmed edges, making it a quicker sew than you might expect!
About the Fabric
The toweling fabric from Ruby Star Society is made of thick, squishy, nubby cotton that feels so soft and comfortable - perfect for wearing around the house or as a layering piece. It's already pre-hemmed on two sides and comes in a 16" width, which makes it ideal for not only towels and kitchen textiles but also this clever jacket!

What You'll Need
To make your own chore coat jacket, you'll need:
- Ruby Star Society pre-hemmed toweling (around 3 ½ to 4 yards depending on your size)
- A rotary cutter or scissors
- A sewing machine and thread
- Pocket fabric (optional for a fun pop of color!)
- Basic sewing supplies like a measuring tape, pins, and an iron.
Video Tutorial Overview
We followed the Ruby Star Society tutorial closely, and we recorded videos to help you visualize each step! Here’s a quick overview of what we cover in our video series:
- Measuring & Cutting: How to measure the fabric to fit your size and where to cut your pieces.
- Sewing the Jacket Body: We show you how to use the pre-hemmed edges of the toweling for shortcuts, plus how to stitch the pieces together.
- Creating French Seams: Learn how to get those clean finishes with French seams.
- Adding Pockets: Finish your jacket by sewing on some handy pockets with a cute contrasting fabric!
You can find the full video series on our Instagram or YouTube. Each part breaks down the steps, so you can pause and follow along as you sew!
