Beginner Sewing Level 3 - Ashton Top
Ready to take your garment sewing to the next level?
The Ashton Top is a fantastic project for confident beginner garment sewists looking to grow their skills and gain confidence working with garment construction techniques.
This A-line, sleeveless top features bust darts, a faced hem, and clean neckline and armhole finishes. Choose between a hip-length or cropped style depending on your vibe! While the silhouette is simple and approachable, the construction offers just the right amount of challenge to help you level up without feeling overwhelmed.
By the end of class, you'll have a versatile handmade top and a better understanding of garment finishing techniques that you can apply to future projects.
Perfect for those who have a few sewing projects under their belt and are ready to push their skills a little further.
You'll need to buy fabric at least 1 week prior to class to allow time for washing and other prep. You'll arrive to class with your fabric pieces already cut out, and interfacing applied (if needed). You'll receive a video with instructions for how to prep your fabric, measure yourself, and cut out your fabric pattern pieces.
In this course you will learn how to:
- Sew darts for shaping
- Use the Burrito Method to finish a facing cleanly
- Create and attach an all-in-one facing or bias binding
- Sew and finish seams neatly for a professional look
- Apply a beautiful faced hem
- Understand and work from a printed pattern
At the end of class you'll have a completed (or nearly completed) Ashton Top, ready to style for any season!
Depending on your pace, you may need to finish your hem independently. There will be an hour after class for independent work. Instructors will be available for quick questions, but formal instruction will end after the 4-hour class.
Class Duration: 4 Hours + 1 Hour Independent Work Time After Class
Students Bring: Students will need to purchase the Ashton Top pattern by Helen's Closet. Students will also bring their cut out pattern pieces, thread, the printed pattern, and scrap fabric. (An instructional prep video will be sent about 2 weeks before class.)
Suggested Fabric: This pattern is designed for light to midweight woven fabrics — think quilting cotton, linen, lightweight canvas, cotton lawn, or similar. Choose depending on the season and drape you want.
Materials Included with Registration: Once you have purchased the Ashton Top pattern, you can email us the A0 file and we will print a large-format copy for you! It can be picked up at the shop or mailed for an additional $5. You’re welcome to use one of our classroom sewing machines or bring your own. All necessary sewing tools will be provided.
You Will Leave With:
- A (mostly) finished Ashton Top
- New skills for garment finishing and construction
- The confidence to keep making your own clothes
Skill Level: Confident Beginner - Students should have made 5+ sewing projects, including at least one garment, on their own. They are very comfortable operating and troubleshooting a sewing machine, using a rotary cutter, seam ripper, and basic sewing tools. This pattern requires accurate sewing and seam allowances.
Vibe: Full Focus. Hands-On Focus. Learn by doing, with plenty of guidance.
You'll be sewing and learning a ton, but the pace is supportive and steady. There’s space to ask questions and troubleshoot, while still keeping your hands busy most of the time.
Our classes are priced on a sliding scale.
Use your annual household income as a guide to choose your adjusted price. The income levels provided are just a guideline. Ultimately you know your budget best, please pay what is affordable for you.

Absolutely! We have machines here that you're welcome to use, but if you'd rather use your own that's just fine.

Not really. We'll be around running the store while you're here and can help you if you have issues with our machines or a small question or two, but if you need more hands-on help with you're sewing we suggest checking out one of our classes instead!
