Intermediate Sewing Level 3 - Donny Shirt

Description: 

The Donny Shirt is a great project for building your garment making skills! The Donny Shirt is a boxy pull-on top that is designed to be a workhorse in your wardrobe. It is a dartless top with a lapel collar and patch pocket. The Donny is a great everyday top that can be worn with practically anything. Because of its boxy silhouette, the Donny is comfortable but still cool. Pair it with jeans or a skirt, layer it over or under a dress - the sky™s the limit!

Prior to class we'll send you a video guide with instructions of how to:

• Measure yourself to determine your size
• Prep your fabric and pattern
• Cut your pieces and transfer markings 
• Apply interfacing and finish raw edges

You'll need to order or buy fabric at least 1 week prior to class to allow time for washing and other prep. You'll arrive at class in the store with your fabric pieces already cut out, raw edges finished, and interfacing applied. You'll receive a video with instructions for how to prep your fabric, measure yourself, and cut out your fabric pattern pieces. 

In this course you will learn how to:

• Create and sew on a collar
• Pocket placement and attachment
• Burrito Method
• Gathering
• Making and top stitching a placket
• Hemming and finishing 
• How to work from a printed pattern

At the end of class you™ll have a completed shirt body with finished collar and placket.  Depending on the pace you work at you may need to finish the shirt hem on your own. There will be an hour after class that you can stay to continue working on your project, this hour will not include an instructor.

Class Duration: 4 Hours + 1 hour of independent work time after class

Students Bring: Your cut out pattern pieces, thread, the printed pattern, your scrap fabric (you will receive an instructional video on how to cut out your pieces upon registration) 

Materials Required: Fabric, coordinating thread

Suggested Fabric: This pattern is for woven fabrics. You can choose from a variety of fabrics depending on how heavy you would like your shirt to be.  A light - midweight woven will work great.

Materials Included with registration: PDF Printed pattern, and digital copy of the Donny Shirt by Friday Pattern Company (available for pick up at the store upon registration. We can also mail it to you for $5). Use of all needed tools including sewing machine, seam ripper, iron, etc

You will leave with: A (mostly) finished Donny Shirt, and the knowledge and confidence to continue making your own clothes!

Skill Level: Confident Beginner or above

Skill Details:

• Intermediate: Students should have a good amount of sewing experience. Students should have made 5+ sewing projects, including at least one garment, on their own. They are very comfortable operating and troubleshooting a sewing machine, are comfortable using a rotary cutter, seam ripper, and basic sewing tools. If you've never made a garment before we highly recommend taking our Intro to Garments class first!
