Skill Builder - Mastering Buttonholes
Description:
We’ve all been there; your project is nearly finished, and then… buttonholes. Maybe you’re tempted to shove the whole thing in a drawer out of fear, or maybe everything’s going fine until that last buttonhole refuses to cooperate. This class is here to change that.
Our goal is to help you gain confidence and skills so that buttonholes become just another step, not a dreaded obstacle. You'll learn how to approach them with ease, troubleshoot issues, and even fix those inevitable little mistakes (yes, even experienced sewists make them!).
In This Class, You’ll Learn To:
- Set up your sewing machine for buttonhole making
- Achieve consistent buttonholes every time
- Use your machine to sew on a button
- Cut open buttonholes cleanly and safely
- Troubleshoot common problems
- Fix mistakes when they happen (because they will happen sometimes)
Class Duration:
2 hours total:
- 30 minutes of instruction
- 1 hour 15 minutes of hands-on practice
- 15 minutes to clean up and pack up
What to Bring:
- Your sewing machine (in working order). You’ll get the most out of this class by learning on the machine you actually use. If you'd like to use one of our class machines instead, please email us in advance.
- A physical copy of your manual. If your manual is digital, please print it out or bring a device to read it on. It’ll make class a lot smoother.
- Notebook & pen. You’ll want to take notes specific to your machine and setup.
- Scraps of fabric. Bring a variety—cotton, canvas, knits, etc.—especially scraps from upcoming projects so you can practice on the real thing.
- Thread. Any kind is fine, though we recommend using what you plan to sew with later.
You’ll Leave With:
- Confidence to tackle buttonholes on future projects
- Know-how to fix a mistake if something goes sideways
- The stamina to sew 6+ buttonholes in a row without crying (mostly)
Skill Level:
Confident Beginner. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine beyond straight stitching.

Absolutely! We have machines here that you're welcome to use, but if you'd rather use your own that's just fine.

Not really. We'll be around running the store while you're here and can help you if you have issues with our machines or a small question or two, but if you need more hands-on help with you're sewing we suggest checking out one of our classes instead!
